The best winter eats (and drinks!) in Brisbane City

Brisbane’s winter may come by surprise but with it is an opportunity to chow down all the hot dishes you wouldn’t dare touch in summer. Soups, spices, and the odd hot chocolate – these are the top spots for your winter meals and meet ups.

Eats

PappaRich, Wintergarden

Pappa Rich
PappaRich serves a range of traditional and curry laksas – arguably the best winter dish going. Packed with veggies, soup and noodles, these laksas will warm you up from the inside out. Not a laksa fan? That’s ok, the roti plates with meat and vegetable curries have got you sorted.

Taro’s Ramen, Adelaide Street

This Brisbane institution is sure to warm you up on a winter’s day with its much-loved ramens in every good combination. What’s more warm and delicious than a noodle soup in spicy pork broth?

Little Singapore, Charlotte Street

Little Singapore on Charlotte Street and in Queen Street Mall has warm-and-spicy Singaporean dishes for your liking. Its take on the Malaysian laksa is worth a try, otherwise the classic curries or tom yum soup are your winter go-to dishes.

AJ’s Vietnamese Noodle House, Charlotte Street

Vietnamese noodle soup
Go to AJ’s Vietnamese for delicious pho and pork wonton soup. The dishes will set you back about $10.90 and will not disappoint in the flavour department.

Corbett and Claude, Elizabeth Street

Underground is the place to be when the temperature drops. Head to Elizabeth Street to find this sunken modern Italian restaurant serving cheesy gnocchi, pizza and sides.

Fat Noodle, Reddacliffe Place

Celebrity Chef Luke Nguyen’s Fat Noodle Asian Restaurant at Treasury Casino Brisbane is a sure thing for delicious dim sum, beef dumplings, pork buns and bao. But if you’re looking for hearty soup and veggies, the wok menu (stir frys) and noodle soups are sure to impress too. It’s not the cheapest place in the city but you can snag four dumplings for $12.

New Shanghai, Queens Plaza

If you ask any Brisbane local where to go for dumplings in the city, there’s a fair chance they’ll tell you this is the place to go. Tucked away down stairs in Queens Plaza it’s pretty unassuming, but if the line out the door is anything to go off, you can be sure you’re in the right place. If you’re seeking hot-and-delicious, try the speciality soup dumplings.

Karaage, Adelaide Street

Student One’s resident Japanese joint has you covered with warm eats. Pick up a regular udon noodle soup, Japanese curry or marinated and battered karaage chicken with mayo and barbecue sauce for $7.80 each.

Yakiniku Hachi, Elizabeth Street

Yakiniku Hachi is one of the newest residents of the Elizabeth Street Arcade. Think do-it-yourself charcoal grilling and a range of delicious sides. If the food doesn’t keep you warm the table grill will. This spot is popular so you may need to line up for a table, but we can guarantee it will be well worth it.

Drinks

San Churro, Charlotte Street

For the most decadent and therefore delicious hot chocolate, you can’t go past San Churro. The Classic Spanish is a safe choice, but add some chilli and you get the Azteca – San Churro’s signature hot chocolate. There’s also the staple milk, white and dark hot chocolates, as well as hazelnut, choc caramel, one with ice cream, and a peanut butter melt. Need we say more?

Noosa Chocolate Factory, Queen Street

These Queensland chocolatiers know chocolate intimately, and they’ve weaved its wonder into all shapes, sizes and consistencies. The hot chocolate varieties include milk, white, dark, darker, darkest, and black. So if you’re a dark chocolate fan, this is your place. They also brew up one with turkish delight, another with yellow cayenne chili, and one with their house-made fresh rocky road. While you’re there we won’t blame you if you pick up some chocolate for a snack too.

Bonsai Botanika, Elizabeth Street

There’s more hot chocolates here too, but we’re more fans of the matcha green teas and chai lattes. Pair with a slice of flourless chocolate cake from the counter and it’s a matcha made it heaven.

Koto Sanpo, Elizabeth Street

Another matcha heaven is Koto Sanpo, right on the Student One Elizabeth street doorstep. Try its range of matcha lattes and you won’t be disappointed. While you can stick with a classic try the strawberry or white chocolate matcha lattes for something a bit special.
